The 2nd European Phycological Congress took place in Montecatini, Italy, 20-26 September, 1999. There was a significant cyanobacterial presence -- 34 presentations, plus a plenary lecture on the evolution of plastids by Jeffrey Palmer (see related news item). Much of the work related to taxonomy and evolution, but a variety of other topics were covered.
