Formation of the

International Society for Applied Phycology

Official Society Website

On 29th September 1999, during the 8th International Conference on Applied Algology (Montecatini Terme, Italy), at a special meeting attended by 59 interested persons and chaired by Prof. Amos Richmond from Israel, it was decided that an International Society for Applied Phycology (ISAP) should be formed. This step has been long over due and it is indeed a privilege to be able to bring the birth of this New Society to your attention and extend a hearty invitation to you to join.

During this meeting, an interim set of by-laws was adopted and it was also nominated an Executive Committee, which in its first meeting elected two office bearers, namely:
Prof. Johan U. Grobbelaar (Bloemfontein, South Africa), as President
Prof. Mario R. Tredici (Florence, Italy), as President-elect

Dr. Roberto De Philippis (Florence, Italy), upon request of the President, agreed to serve the Society as Treasurer/Secretary.

Already 44 members have paid their annual dues for the year 2000 and we hope to enroll many more in the near future. Benefits to members would include, among others:
Tri-Annual Congresses
Specialized workshops
Discounted rates for selected journals
A Newsletter
A Web page, with information on the Society and on its members (papers, recently obtained results, addresses etc.)
A Society through which opinions and actions could be lobbied and voiced

Your membership and participation would enable our New Society to grow and achieve the goals and dreams we all have for applied phycology and algal biotechnology. You may complete the attached application form for membership or visit our web-site at:
